A new Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) system, funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Council (EPSRC), will leverage AI to enhance the discovery of sustainable and innovative semiconductor materials. Located at the National Epitaxy Facility in Sheffield, which collaborates with Cambridge University and UCL, this advanced equipment aims to facilitate research on unique material combinations, including semiconductors and superconductors, to inspire novel device concepts. As the semiconductor industry, valued at £900 billion, faces challenges such as supply shortages and environmental sustainability, this initiative is crucial for securing the UK’s position in semiconductor research and development. In addition, a new electron-beam lithography facility has been inaugurated at Southampton University, and the government has unveiled a £4.75 million skills package to strengthen the UK’s semiconductor workforce.
