The Engineering and Physical Sciences Council (EPSRC) has funded new Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) equipment designed to leverage AI for the rapid discovery and development of sustainable semiconductor materials. This advanced system will enable innovative research at the National Epitaxy Facility in Sheffield, in collaboration with Cambridge University and UCL, focusing on unique material combinations, such as semiconductors and superconductors. As the semiconductor industry, valued at £900 billion, continues to drive technological advancements, there is an increasing demand for environmentally sustainable materials. Professor Jon Heffernan emphasized the importance of semiconductors in technology, especially highlighted by recent global shortages. Additionally, a new electron-beam facility at Southampton University was inaugurated to push the boundaries of semiconductor chip development, while a £4.75 million government initiative aims to bolster the UK’s semiconductor talent and R&D capabilities.
