Unifying Spirit: Officers and Athletes Join Forces in Special Olympics Torch Run

The 56th annual Special Olympics Indiana competition kicked off in Terre Haute with the Law Enforcement Torch Run on Friday, beginning in Indianapolis and culminating at the Indiana State University campus. Aidian Ramirez from Westfield completed a 5.4-mile leg of the run, arriving early at Hulman Center, where he passed the torch to fellow runners Shelby Baker and John Mark Edwards. Accompanied by nearly 50 law enforcement members, they will use the torches to ignite the cauldron during the Summer Games Opening Ceremony next Friday. Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun highlighted the event as a significant boost for the city, emphasizing the inspiration the athletes provide. Police officials expressed their long-standing support for the Special Olympics, and participants shared their excitement and camaraderie during the run, concluding with a communal lunch and celebration of the athletes’ achievements.
