Leaders of the Cranborne Chase National Landscape, an International Dark Sky Reserve located near Salisbury, Wiltshire, are advocating for reduced light pollution to protect the region’s unique night sky and nocturnal wildlife. Established as a dark sky reserve in 2019, Cranborne Chase is celebrated for its exceptional starry vistas and attracts tourists for stargazing activities. Advisor Steve Tonkin urges local farmers and residents to implement warm lighting and canopy covers to minimize light impact, emphasizing that nocturnal habitats are increasingly threatened by artificial light. Efforts are underway, including responsible street lighting planning by local councils and the use of sensor and warmer bulbs, to preserve the luminous experience that attracts visitors and fosters a greater appreciation for nighttime environments.
