The University of Toronto’s St. George campus is undergoing a significant lighting retrofit as part of Project Leap, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 50% by 2027. This initiative involves upgrading from traditional fluorescent and incandescent lighting to energy-efficient LEDs in 38 buildings, saving enough electricity to power more than 520 homes annually. The new lighting enhances research capabilities in the plant research facilities, allowing for precise control over environmental conditions required for over 500 unique plant species. Researchers are now able to generate reproducible results for studies in fields like evolutionary biology and plant resilience, advancing their work on critical issues such as climate change and biodiversity. This upgrade not only supports sustainability goals but also aligns the university’s infrastructure with the values underpinning current research initiatives.
