A new study from Flinders University reveals that lighting in casinos, particularly blue-enriched lighting, dramatically influences decision-making and risk-taking among gamblers. The research indicates that exposure to blue light reduces sensitivity to losses, leading individuals to make riskier bets with diminished emotional responses to their losses. This phenomenon is attributed to biological reactions to different wavelengths of light, notably how blue light suppresses melatonin and alters alertness and reward perceptions. As the gambling industry increasingly adopts these strategies both offline and online, experts call for policy interventions to regulate environmental designs in gambling spaces to promote healthier gambling behaviors.
