Updated Lighting in National Parks Offers Benefits for All, Study Reveals

Visitors to Grand Teton National Park can now experience enhanced stargazing opportunities, including views of the Milky Way, thanks to new, dimmable red-hued outdoor lighting recently installed in Colter Bay Village. A collaborative study by the NPS Natural Sounds and Night Skies Division, Boise State University, and The Pennsylvania State University assessed visitor perceptions of these lighting adjustments, which replaced the previous bright white streetlights. The findings revealed that park visitors prefer the blended red-white lighting as it provides greater visual comfort, supports wildlife, and improves the enjoyment of nighttime recreational activities. Contrasting with typical urban lighting preferences, which often favor bright lights for safety, the study suggests that in a national park setting, visitors welcome lighting that preserves night vision and enhances the natural environment.
