North Yorkshire is set to enhance the protection of its renowned dark skies with a £4 million initiative to replace 4,500 outdated streetlights with energy-efficient LED bulbs. Over the next three years, half of these new lights will be programmed to operate only from dusk until midnight, significantly reducing light pollution. Keane Duncan, the council’s executive member for highways and transport, emphasized that the upgrade is expected to save approximately £300,000 annually in energy costs while also benefiting local nocturnal wildlife and improving stargazing opportunities for residents and visitors alike.
