North Yorkshire Council is set to enhance street lighting in the region by replacing approximately 4,500 streetlights with energy-efficient LED technology, aiming to save £300,000 annually in energy costs while reducing carbon emissions and protecting rural dark skies. The £4 million project, which begins this month and will take three years to complete, also includes the installation of part-night lighting to minimize light pollution in line with the International Dark Sky Reserve status of the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales National Parks. Council officials highlight that this upgrade will generate over one million kilowatts of energy savings, supporting nocturnal wildlife and improving visibility of the night sky. Residents will be notified before work commences, and more information is available on the council’s website.
