The mayor’s office and the Downtown Development District of Baton Rouge are planning to enhance downtown illumination by replacing outdated yellow bulbs with brighter LED lights. Residents have expressed concerns about safety due to dim lighting during evening strolls. LED lights, which provide a whiter glow and require less maintenance, are expected to improve safety and reduce long-term costs. The initiative, estimated at $66,000, will be funded jointly by the city and the Downtown Development District, and is set to unfold in two phases, starting with the Central business District. The metro council will discuss the proposal at their upcoming meeting, aiming for broader upgrades throughout downtown.
