Urban Crop Solutions has successfully installed its first vertical farming tower at Agrotopia, a research center for sustainable agriculture in Roeselare, Belgium, marking a significant milestone in the integration of vertical farming with traditional greenhouse practices. Designed to maximize space efficiency, the tower features a multi-level growing system supported by dynamic lighting that merges natural sunlight with LED technology. Each of the three planned towers will stand 10 meters tall and include 16 moving tables, allowing for the cultivation of various crops, including leafy greens, strawberries, and microgreens. This initiative, a collaboration with Inagro and UGent, aims to enhance cultivation techniques while addressing the increasing need for efficient space use in urban areas. With the project set to expand with two additional towers, it underscores Flanders’ commitment to sustainable food production in the face of diminishing agricultural land.
