At Joya-La Barreta Ecological Park near Queretaro, Mexico, a community of amateur astronomers gathered for stargazing and comet-watching as the Tsuchinshan-Atlas comet made its appearance. The park, which has been certified as the first urban night sky space in Latin America by DarkSky International, offers a rare clear view of the night sky amid increasing urbanization and light pollution threats. Advocacy efforts led by local astronomer Juan Carlos Hernández focus on preserving the park’s dark sky status, which is crucial for both astronomical observation and the biodiversity that relies on natural light cycles. However, ongoing challenges include rising light pollution and a need for greater governmental support to enforce regulations aimed at reducing artificial lighting. The community is committed to educating the public about the importance of protecting this celestial resource for future generations.
