Australian researchers have discovered a novel method to reduce the risk of shark attacks, involving swimmers outfitting themselves with LED lights reminiscent of festive Christmas displays. A collaborative study conducted by scientists from Macquarie University, La Trobe University, The University of Western Australia, and Flinders University focused on great white sharks, which often mistake the dark silhouettes of swimmers for prey. By towing illuminated seal decoys, the researchers found that the sharks were significantly less likely to attack when the decoys were equipped with lights, suggesting that brighter illuminations disrupt the sharks’ predatory camouflage. The study highlights the potential for developing new, non-invasive shark deterrent technologies to enhance safety for beachgoers in areas prone to shark interaction.
