On New Year’s Day, a solar storm struck Earth, resulting in a spectacular display of Northern Lights across Wales, marking the first significant auroras of 2025. Bright purple and pink hues were observed from areas including Denbighshire, Aberystwyth, Ceredigion, and Swansea on Wednesday night. These purple auroras, caused by nitrogen atoms in the atmosphere reacting to a strong solar wind, are relatively rare compared to the more common green or red variants. Last year saw unprecedented Northern Lights visibility in Wales, coinciding with the peak of the 11-year solar cycle.
