The Sunshine Coast Council is planning to establish a ‘Dark Sky Park’ at Howells Knob Lookout, a prime location known for its high altitude and minimal light pollution, making it ideal for stargazing. This initiative aligns with the growing global trend of astro-tourism and follows the council’s Urban Lighting Master Plan, which incorporates principles from the Dark Sky Park Association. Environment portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay expressed excitement about the potential site, emphasizing its exceptional viewing conditions of the night sky, especially in relation to Brisbane. While Howells Knob is currently the top candidate, the council is also exploring other opportunities for larger dark sky venues to accommodate greater visitor capacity. The Urban Lighting Master Plan aims to enhance energy efficiency and reduce costs for public lighting across the region.
