Experts are exploring the possibility of designating the historic city of York as the UK’s first ‘dark sky city’ in an effort to combat light pollution. This initiative aims to join York with the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales national parks, which are already recognized as Dark Sky Reserves. Academics from York St John University recently collaborated with astronomers to discuss strategies, such as implementing warmer, directional lighting and reducing lighting hours, to enhance visibility of the night sky. As of November 2023, there are 21 International Dark Sky Reserves worldwide. Dr. Jen Hall from the university emphasized York’s potential to lead in responsible urban lighting, which could provide exceptional starry nights while protecting the city’s cultural and natural heritage.
