Kanpur celebrated a significant milestone as Metro services officially began between IIT and Kanpur Central, attracting eager commuters who formed queues from 6 a.m. on launch day. Covering 16 kilometers in just 28 minutes and costing Rs 40, the new route includes five additional underground stations and marked an enhancement in the city’s transport infrastructure. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who launched the extension, emphasized the Metro’s role in addressing Kanpur’s past traffic challenges while Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath praised its contribution to the city’s industrial identity. The Metro features modern amenities, such as escalators, lifts, and security systems, and operates daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. To promote eco-friendly transport, UPMRC introduced pink e-rickshaws and e-autos for last-mile connectivity. With advanced safety measures and energy-efficient designs, the project aims to reduce carbon emissions and improve commuting experiences, with expectations of increased daily ridership as more residents embrace the system.
