The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has sanctioned a ₹94.10 crore project focused on the maintenance and enhancement of the city’s street lighting over the next year. This initiative encompasses the upkeep of 3.01 lakh street lights and 507 high mast lights, with plans to install 40,688 new LED lights at a cost of ₹39.66 crore to replace damaged units. Notably, the GCC is shifting to a contract-based system for maintenance, outsourcing the work to private contractors instead of using its in-house electrical department. This strategy will involve hiring new electricians and contract workers, especially as 420 permanent staff are set to retire soon. Contractors will be accountable for repairs, with penalties of up to 15% imposed for unresolved issues. The initiative aims to improve the efficiency and responsiveness of the city’s lighting infrastructure, ensuring a better service for residents.
