GMC Initiates Project to Install 60 High-Mast LED Lights Throughout the City

Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has launched a significant initiative to enhance city illumination with the installation of 60 high-mast LED lights, ensuring each of the city’s wards is equipped. The recent inauguration of two new lights at Kahilipara and Lokhra marks a pivotal step in this modernization effort, conducted in collaboration with Guwahati Unnayan Company Ltd. (GUCL). With 50 lights now operational and plans for 10 more to be completed in four months, Guwahati’s total will rise to 113 high-mast LED lights, a substantial upgrade from the existing 53. Mayor Mrigen Sarania highlighted the project’s role in increasing safety and accessibility for residents, including plans for lighting in 29 cremation grounds. Local residents have expressed optimism about the initiative’s potential to reduce unsocial activities and enhance public safety; however, some believe additional lights may be necessary for comprehensive coverage. The project is part of GMC’s broader lighting program, which has already seen the installation of over 20,000 LED street lights, with further expansions underway.
